Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time position is responsible for the inclusion and supervision of participants with exceptionalities within town programs. Inclusion programs include ICAN (Integrated Care for Assisted Needs) for participants with exceptionalities between the ages of 4 – 18 years old running during the Fall, Winter & Spring program sessions. Successful candidates must be able to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one or two-to-one support to participants with exceptionalities, ensuring that activities are safe, fun and appropriate
  • Ensure a safe and well-supervised program environment, while encouraging individuals to actively participate and socialize
  • Work with parents and Coordinator, Recreation to make program accommodations that best meet individual participant’s needs; adapt daily activities to ensure inclusivity of participants
  • Assist participants with toileting, feeding and changing always in the presence of another staff person, as required
  • Ensure program delivery upholds principles of HIGH FIVE®
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of program policies and procedures and enforce the established rules and guidelines governing the safety and conduct of participants with support of Inclusion and Coordinator, Recreation
  • Conduct positive working relationships with colleagues and strive to create a program environment that fosters respect and inclusion
  • Communicate information about programs to parents including special activities and specific information about their child, including any issues that may have arisen at the program
  • Work to resolve parent concerns in cooperation with Coordinator, Recreation
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Maintain a safe/clean program area including proper storage of equipment
  • Attend all mandatory staff functions: training, staff meetings and site clean-ups and all allocated program times
  • Report any accidents, incidents, concerns or site damage to the Coordinator, Recreation ensuring all appropriate forms are completed
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Perform all other duties as assigned in accordance with department objectives

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 16 years of age
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with children
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with persons with exceptionalities
  • Knowledge of program adaptations and behavior modification techniques
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) is considered an asset
  • Behaviour Management Systems Training (BMS) or equivalent is considered an asset
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C is required
  • Able to perform all activities including but not limited to: lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment
  • Must be able to Swim

Hourly Rate: $15.54
